Know all about DUI and DWI and their difference!

Every country has their own sets of rules, laws, and regulations. These are generated for the benefits of the citizens only. The laws have different sectors and sections that they cover. It can be civil laws; it can be related to theft, robbery, etc. and even more severe crimes such as murder and others. However, amongst the many sections of laws, one of the most important ones is traffic. Traffic laws are meant for the safety of the people on the roads.

Speed limits, following the traffic signals, etc., are some of the most important sectors of traffic laws. Amongst them, drunk and driving is a major section. Driving in a drunken state is an extremely dangerous action. Not only can it cause fatal accidents for the drunk driver, but it can also cause damage and serious danger to the other people, either the pedestrians or those, traveling by some other vehicles.

The laws – DUI and DWI and their difference:

There are two very common words in traffic laws – DUI and DWI. However, many people do not know what they are and what is the difference between DUI and DWI? If you are also one of them, read on!

DUI is driving under the influence; whereas, DWI is driving while intoxicated. Though they both might sound similar, as per the laws, they are different. The difference lies in the age group. If a person is found a state without the ability to use normal physical or mental faculties, he or she might be charged with any of the two.

DWI is charged for those, who are above the age of 21. The parameter for judging would be 0.08 in the breath or blood alcohol measurement. This is considered as evident intoxication. DUI, on the other hand, is a lesser charge and is charged for those, who are below the age of 21. Whether alcohol or other intoxication has impaired his or her system or not, does not matter much in the case of DUI. However, even if a driver is below 21 and the alcohol level is 0.08, and above, DWI might be charged, depending on the state laws.

The punishment for DUI and DWI:

Now that you have known what does DWI stand for and what is DUI, you need to know about the penalties. Both these are punishable offenses. If you are charged any of these, you will have to pay a severe penalty for this. One might also have to pay a fine as well as serve a sentence to jail.

  • If you commit the DWI offense for the first time, the fine would be up to $2000
  • Depending on the extent of the offense, you might have to serve a jail sentence anywhere between 3 to 180 days.
  • Your driving license may also be seized for up to a year. In order to retain the license, you might have to pay a fine of $1000 to $2000 for 3 years.

For DUI, the first time offenders have to pay a fine of $500. An alcohol awareness class is a mandatory one to be attended. He or she will also have to serve a compulsory community service of 20 to 40 hours. The license will be suspended for 60 days.
